A group of educationists, researcher, academicians, artists and social workers led by Dr. Kumar Saptarshi, the stanch follower of Mahatma Gandhi and Jayprakash Narayan, established Indian Institute for Social Development and Research i.e (Bhartiya Samaj Vikas and Sanshodhan Santha) in Pune in 1978. He has a long background of social reform and movement against injustice for the rural poor and socially oppressed people. The trust was established in the year 1978 with the blessings of Rastrapita Mahatma Gandhi and  Loknayak Jayaprakash Narayan.

Rashtrapita Mahatma Gandhi Mahavidyalaya, Khednagar, Tal: Karjat Dist: Ahmednagar, Maharahtra, is a premier educational institution based on social movement was established in the year 2001, has to its credit of providing higher education to the rural people.

IISDR i.e (BSVSS) purchased a 10.5 Hectares (26 acres) of land which was having murm soil with boulders. The rainfall is about 50 cm with high standard deviation (>25 cm). This area observes frequent famine and hence included severely drought affected Zone of Maharashtra. The campus is blessed by great personalities like Jayaprakash Narayan, former Prime Minister Chandrashekhar, Baba Amate, Vikas and Prakash Amate, former speaker Balasaheb Bharade, respected persons like S. M. Joshi, Anna Hajare, Nanasaheb Gore, Film actors Nana Patekar, Nilu Phule and many more from the field of education, social work, Industry and Politics.

The college is affliated to Savitribai Phule Pune University,Pune. The college campus is eco-friendly,located on the bank of Bhima River. It is 14 km away from National Highway- 65 (Solapur –Pune highway), situated at Khed in rural area.
